چکیده

In the summer of 1938 an outbreak of encephalomyelitis in man in the vicinity of Massachusetts was proved to be due to the virus of equine encephalomyetitis, Eastern strain (1). An epidemic of encephalomyelitis in horses had appeared a month before and continued during the human outbreak (2). I t was thought, although not proved, that the virus was transmitted by mosquito vectors (3). The age distribution indicated that the highest incidence was among the youngest children. Thus, more than a third of the thirty-eight recognized cases were in children under 2 years of age, half under 5 years, and more thnn two-thirds under 10 years of age (2). This age distribution is of special interest in connection with previous reports of an increasing resistance with age of animals to peripheral injection of equine encephalomyelitis virus as weU as of certain other neurotropic viruses. In each case cerebral suceptibility was found not to be influenced by age.

Susceptibility of Peruvian mosquitoes to eastern equine encephalitis virus.

Mosquitoes were collected in the Amazon Basin, near Iquitos, Peru, and used in experimental studies to evaluate their susceptibility to strains of eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) that were isolated from mosquitoes captured within 20 km of Iquitos. When fed on hamsters or chickens with a viremia of 4105 plaque-forming units (PFU) of EEEV/ml, Culex pedroi Sirivanakarn and Belkin, Aedesfu...

Susceptibility of Aedes albopictus C6/36 cells to viral infection.

The susceptibility of the C6/36 clone of Aedes albopictus monolayer cell cultures was determined with 46 prototype viruses passed through three subcultures. Viral growth was confirmed by titration of the passage material in other susceptible host systems. Nineteen viruses demonstrated good growth in C6/36 cells: coxsackievirus group A type 10 and group B types 2, 3, 4, and 5; enterovirus 69; mu...

Susceptibility parameters of Aedes albopictus to per oral infection with eastern equine encephalitis virus.

Aedes albopictus (Skuse) mosquitoes were fed on snowy egrets, Egretta thula (Thayer and Bangs), that had been infected by subcutaneous inoculation of eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus. Freshly fed mosquitoes were frozen and tested to determine how much virus they had ingested. Other fed mosquitoes from the same lots were incubated for 7 d at 27 degrees C before testing. Seven lots of Ae. ...

Experimental infection of wading birds with eastern equine encephalitis virus.

To study the susceptibility of wading birds to eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus and to determine their potential as reservoir or amplifying hosts, fledgling glossy ibises (Plegadis falcinellus) and snowy egrets (Egretta thula) were captured in New Jersey (USA) and shipped to Colorado (USA) where they were experimentally inoculated with EEE virus. All 16 snowy egrets and 14 (93%) of 15 of...

Susceptibility of white Carneau pigeons to respiratory infection by Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus.

It has been found that certain arbovirvises may be transmitted among avian hosts by modes other than mosquito bite. Holden (1) demonstrated contact transmission of Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus among penned pheasants. He postulated that infections resulted from ingestion of infected materials or by inhalation of infective droplets. Chamberlain and others (2) observed contact infection...
